Safety Zayne Anderson a Dolphins Captain Candidate in 2026
Continuing the Fins Faithful series on potential 2026 Miami Dolphins team captains, a sleeper candidate has emerged.
Safety Zayne Anderson has been one of the standout performers in the secondary. He has consistently made plays and brings more experience than any other defender in head coach Jeff Hafley’s scheme. Anderson has even taken on the role of an on-field mentor, guiding the team’s young defensive backs.
His first two NFL seasons was with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. He played the last three years with the Green Bay Packers, the last two under Hafley. Although he has primarily been a special teamer throughout his five-year career, Anderson has potential to make an impact in both phases of the game. Combined with his familiarity with the defensive playbook, he could also emerge as one of the team’s leaders this season.
Anderson did not play a defensive snap during his time with the Chiefs or in his first season with Green Bay. However, he logged 145 snaps in Hafley’s defense over the past two seasons. Despite limited game experience at safety, his name has come up frequently during practices in South Florida.
And on Friday, Hafley praised Anderson while speaking with reporters.
“Yeah, I think there’s a lot of similarities in what we did in the two years in Green Bay and here now. There’s a lot of new stuff, too, but he’s got a grasp on really how I kind of think and how I see things in the back end and he’s hearing me give him a lot of the same coaching points, because I’m in that room a lot, and I was in that room a lot. So he’s hearing a lot of the same things from year three now.”
Added Hafley:
“I think there’s a comfort level that he trusts me and I trust him. At the same time, there’s really good competition in that room right now and I will say, Zayne has done a nice job. Again, he needs to be consistent and the Washington week, it will be exciting to see him go up against another team and play in these preseason games. But he’s become a dependable guy back there.”
Back in June, Hafley told media:
“I was a big fan of Zayne. Zayne played and started for us in multiple games throughout my two years there. Zayne was a really good team player, good teammate, smart, physical. Zayne is the type of guy that I always felt if he needed to go in the game, I wasn’t going to lose any sleep over. I had a lot of faith in him, and I think he’s done a really good job out there.”
Hafley went on:
“He’s very mature. I think the guys in the locker room would say that he’s a great teammate. He’s very unselfish. He knows what he’s doing. He studies it really hard, and he’s a guy that has worked really hard to put himself in a position to where he is now. I think for me, it always comes back to trust. I trust the guy, and he’ll compete for a job just like the rest of these guys, but I’m glad he’s here.”
In a safety room that is thin in both experience and depth, Anderson could be penciled in as an opening-day starter. The group includes second-year player Dante Trader Jr. and veteran journeyman Lonnie Anderson Jr. Both have been dealing with injuries over the past few days, giving Anderson plenty of opportunity. Miami also signed Major Burns from the UFL in June. Fifth-round rookie Michael Taaffe and undrafted free agent Louis Moore are also competing for playing time.
While both rookies have made their presence felt early in camp, Anderson appears to be the early favorite to lead the group. He is making a legitimate case to be a captain. Anderson was the second former Packer to follow Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan to Miami. Of course the first was quarterback Malik Willis.
As the Dolphins continue to search for leadership within a very youthful locker room, keep an eye on Anderson. He could be a player who dons the “C” this season.
