Dolphins Roster Update: Salyer Out, Ewers Sidelined
The Miami Dolphins are still weeks away from the regular season, but injuries are already forcing them to take a closer look at the depth of their roster.
Offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer will miss the season after being placed on injured reserve, while quarterback Quinn Ewers is dealing with a groin injury that will keep him sidelined for the time being.
Both developments put even more focus on Miami’s depth as the preseason continues.
Salyer Loss Makes Wallace Addition More Important
Salyer entered training camp with an opportunity to compete for a starting job. Even if he ultimately opened the season on the bench, his experience and versatility gave Miami a valuable option behind its starting offensive line.
Salyer’s absence leaves Miami with one fewer experienced option behind its starting group.
The timing of Miami’s recent trade for Caedan Wallace looks even more significant as a result. The Dolphins acquired Wallace from the New England Patriots on Aug. 10, and his first preseason action with Miami offered some early encouragement.
According to Pro Football Focus, Wallace earned an 87.5 overall grade over 17 snaps against Washington. He received a 91.0 run-blocking grade and a 79.0 pass-blocking grade.
Seventeen snaps aren’t enough to draw any major conclusions, but Wallace took advantage of his first opportunity. A move that initially added competition and versatility now has the potential to become much more important.
The Dolphins should still be looking for help along the offensive line. As teams make roster decisions over the next few weeks, Miami should evaluate the players who hit the market and consider a trade if there’s an offensive lineman they like.
Ewers Injury Adds Another Roster Question
Quarterback is another position worth monitoring.
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that Ewers is expected to be sidelined this week after suffering a groin injury early in Friday’s preseason game against Washington. His availability beyond this week will depend on his recovery.
Ewers played through the injury and finished 1 of 8 for 27 yards with an interception. The injury doesn’t erase a difficult performance, but it does provide additional context when evaluating his night.
With Ewers unavailable for now, Mark Gronowski is back with the Dolphins after being waived earlier this month.
Gronowski gives Miami another quarterback while Ewers recovers. Whether the Dolphins eventually look outside the organization could depend on how quickly Ewers is able to return. If his absence extends deeper into the preseason, Miami could evaluate quarterbacks who become available as teams make their roster cuts.
Miami also signed linebacker Cam Riley and waived cornerback Ethan Robinson with an injury designation. Riley entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2025 and later spent time on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad during his rookie season.
The Dolphins still have time before the regular season begins, but the injuries to Salyer and Ewers provide an early test of Miami’s roster depth.
