LoFi’s Lowdown: Dolphins vs Falcons one guy to watch and he is on the Falcons.
Dolphins have a backup quarterback position that is not settled and that player could be on the Falcons.
Introducing, Jack Strand the 6’5″ 240lb QB a 2026 UDFA pick up by the Atlanta Falcons has put together good camp and preseason. The former starting QB for MSUM checks alot of boxes in the physical traits category. Like our current starting QB Malik Willis he can throw off platform and at every conceivable angle. For a division 2 football QB he has demonstrated in his time with the Falcons he worth taking a look at. In the Colts game, he produced 212 yds passing completing 12 of 17. He also rushed for 22 yards on 9 carries, including a 16 yard touchdown run. With Penix out he has worked alot with the 2nd and 3rd string units gaining praise from head coach Kevin Stefanski. “A coach on the MSU-Moorhead staff told me in the spring that Strand may have been a top-3 drafted QB if he’d taken NIL offers to jump up his last season,” Nystrom wrote on Twitter.
Michael Penix Jr. being cleared has put four quarterbacks in on Atlanta’s Roster. Tua is currently in competition to start the season or is considered more of as a bridge Quarterback till Penix is ready to play. That brings us too backup Quarterback conversation for the Atlanta Falcons. If Penix ready week 1 which veteran is the best choice coming off the bench Cooper Rush or Tua Tagovailoa as the season progresses? One would think the guy competing for number one spot would inherit the number 2 spot but there is a, but. But….. which player can practice with the 2s and 3s of your team and come off the bench and more effective with the ones.
Here is where I believe things get interesting. Jack Strand will get poached from a Practice Squad, he has been to good and Atlanta Falcons are high on him he would have to make the 53. Cooper Rush the veteran backup would provide more stability with his availability than Tua with nagging injuries showing up again as your 2nd or 3rd string QB. Also, i would add Cooper Rush off the bench versus Tua off the bench scenario i would give the nod to Cooper because Tua timing won’t be on point with the starters do the lack of reps during the week and his ability to work of script not his strong suit. This leaves us with interesting scenario, does Tua with a declining camp get the nod over to Rush or Strand as your backup and third string QB? I don’t see a world where Michael Penix would see the open market, so whoever is on the out puts a QB in the market. That is where the Dolphin’s should look to make Caeden Wallace move if they high on Jack Strand too.
To me the QB I believe would be cut is Tua Tagovailoa, reason being Jack Strand Prototypical NFL body wins QB3 and Cooper Rush stays as the veteran backup, more so because of Tua injury history. Maybe the Dolphin’s can lure Jack Strand away with a late round draft pick or a player swap in a position of needs for Atlanta. Quinn Ewers has not had a great camp so far as well as Cam Miller so the Dolphins will be actively lconsidering more competition for the backup spot for the Miami Dolphins that can develop. Someone like Jack Strand has high upside and given this year will probably not be a Playoff run for the Miami Dolphins’ he provides the Dolphins’ and it’s fan base an underdog that has shown some promising football for the Atlanta Falcons and will probably be able to compete for our Miami Dolphins’ backup QB spot.
Jack Strand your officially on LoFi’s watch list.
