Miami Dolphins send 2028 sixth-round pick to Green Bay Packers for QB Kyle McCord
GM Jon-Eric Sullivan Busy Over Weekend
The Miami Dolphins and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan had a busy weekend in the quarterback trade market. Sullivan first traded Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday for a sixth-round pick in 2028. He then flipped that asset over to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday to acquire 2025 sixth-round selection, Kyle McCord.
Initially drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, McCord spent the 2025 NFL season on their practice squad and was released last January. The Packers immediately signed him to a future contract just a few days after Sullivan departed the organization for the Miami Dolphins. While there was no over-lap of Sullivan and McCord in Green Bay, yet Miami’s new quarterback will see a familiar face in passing coordinator, Kevin Patullo. McCord and Patullo were in Philadelphia together in 2025.
Outstanding Preseason for McCord
McCord had a fantastic 2026 preseason for Green Bay, making him a hot commodity heading into roster cut down weekend. He finished August with an impressive stat line of going 46-70 passing for a completion percentage of 65.7. He threw for 446 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 102.4.
The former Syracuse and Ohio State product, McCord had a very productive senior season in college. In 2024 he threw for a nation-leading 4,779 yards and averaged a gaudy 367.6 per game. He added 43 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
2025 NFL Draft Scouting Profile
During the 2025 NFL Draft scouting process, The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler wrote, “Kyle McCord is a primary pocket passer whose experience in a pro-style attack and ability to win inside of structure should present the opportunity to compete for snaps at the NFL level.”
His skill set is a bit different than Dolphins’ starter Malik Willis, and not as improvisational or mobile. However, he gets the ball out very quickly, extremely accurate on short passes, and throws a very good deep ball. A smart player who shows pro-ready poise and leadership ability, McCord could become one of the league’s better backups.
The Dolphins could still be active in rostering a third-string quarterback should certain players become available following the roster cutdown deadline on Sunday.
