Quinn Ewers traded: What comes next for the Dolphins?

I attended a lot of practices during training camp, and I kept wondering where Quinn Ewers stood in this quarterback room. He didn’t play in the preseason finale, and less than 24 hours later, the Dolphins traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a sixth-round selection in the 2028 NFL Draft. Whatever went into the decision, Miami was ready to move on.

Let’s also be honest about what I saw during training camp. Ewers may have had one good practice. I told you about it when it happened. Outside of that, I didn’t think he had a very good camp, and he didn’t play well in the preseason.

Now Ewers gets a fresh opportunity in Jacksonville with a team that needed another quarterback. Good for him. Maybe getting into a different situation is exactly what he needs.

For the Dolphins, the question is what they do next.

Look, I like Cam Miller. There are some things to work with, and I could see Miami keeping him on the practice squad. But he hasn’t shown enough to be handed the No. 2 quarterback job.

Trading Ewers before final cuts is fascinating. You have to wonder if the Dolphins have already had conversations or if they have an idea of who could become available. I find it hard to believe they aren’t looking at what could come through a trade or on waivers.

There are some intriguing names and situations worth checking on. Anthony Richardson would be my first call. Taylen Green, Jalen Milroe, Joe Milton and Kyle McCord are other young quarterbacks I would ask about. J.J. McCarthy is another young quarterback I would monitor.

I’m not saying all of those quarterbacks are available. I’m saying Miami should make the calls and find out.

A few years ago, Green Bay acquired Malik Willis from Tennessee for a seventh-round pick. This is the kind of move I want to see this regime looking for. Find a young quarterback buried on another depth chart, bring him into your system and see what your coaching staff can do with him.

The next 24 to 48 hours should tell us a lot. I’ll be watching closely because I don’t believe this quarterback room is finished.
